I set empty cells to hidden, but that caused the configure icons to move around.

I used fences on a site and copied the field template.

It needs to be enabled for the template to work correctly.

Is there a way to toggle usage of the template if it's enabled?

Need to find a way to have the dropbutton hover over other items when it expands. Currently it expands the element in place and pushes things around.
